IESO York Region Non-Wires Alternatives Demonstration Project

This demonstration project is intended to test the ability of distributed energy resources (DERs) to serve as alternatives to traditional wires-based solutions in meeting local, regional and provincial electricity needs. As the project sponsor as well as the operator of the province’s bulk power system and wholesale electricity market, Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is working with Alectra, the acting distribution system operator, to implement Canada’s first local electricity market. When properly sited, DERs can help manage local peak demand, alleviate congestion, and provide services to defer, reduce or avoid the costs associated with developing new generation, transmission or distribution system infrastructure.
